GETTING YOUR MEDICAL BILLS PAID

Oliver Law Group P.C. Aug. 10, 2018

MICHIGAN PERSONAL INJURY LAWYERS ENSURE YOUR FINANCIAL SECURITY

When you get into a car accident, you are in a state of shock for quite some time. You need to process what just happened, and follow the proper steps for what to do after a car accident. This involves seeking medical attention, legal counsel, and contacting local authorities to report and document the accident.

When your doctor’s visits are done and the dust has settled, you may start to worry about bills. Medical bills can quickly add up. The numbers may not even out with your bank account. You may start to question this process, and panic about who is responsible for these costs. That’s why The Oliver Law Group, P.C. represents people in need of compensation. You have paid enough in stress and losses.

MICHIGAN’S NO-FAULT INSURANCE BENEFITS

Michigan is a “no-fault” state, meaning that those involved in accidents turn to their own insurance companies for compensation and medical coverage first. Prescription costs, medical bills and added expenses are several of the costs that are covered under Michigan’s no-fault laws. In the state, every car owner is required to buy a certain amount of coverage in order to register and drive a car. These types of coverages fall into three separate categories:

  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): This coverage pays for medical expenses, lost wages, attendant care costs and other assorted costs associated with an auto accident. This coverage exists for anyone involved in an auto accident, so long as you are insured.

  • Property Protection (PPI): Will pay up to a certain amount if your vehicle causes damage to another person’s property or business. This does not include paying for damage to another vehicle.

  • Bodily Injury and Property Damage: If you, or someone under your policy is driving your car and causes an accident that results in injury to another person, this insurance covers the victim’s costs.

PERSONAL INJURY PROTECTION

You are entitled to different types of PIP benefits after you are injured in a car accident. These benefits should cover several aspects of health care:

  • Bills, Prescriptions and Expenses: You may have been prescribed medicine in the hospital, or had a lengthy stay. No matter what the treatment, it should be covered under your PIP benefits. This service covers ambulance trips, surgery, physical therapy, in-home care and medical equipment.

  • Lost Income: During your recovery period, it is more than like that you have missed work. This, of course, means you have lost income as a result. Thankfully you are able to recover it with PIP coverage. Lost wages are payable for up to three years after the accident.

  • Survivor’s Loss: If the accident is fatal, payment can be made to surviving family members. This benefit can contribute to funeral and burial costs.

Michigan has a very robust PIP system that, in theory, will pay for all of your medical expenses with no policy limit and no end date. But just because you’re entitled to those benefits in theory doesn’t mean you can easily get them in practice. Your insurance company may refuse to pay for your benefits, or deny your claim entirely. They can delay payments for as long as possible. You should seek legal counsel if your compensation is being delayed, or if you are unsure of what steps to take next.
