The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently announced that the arthritis treatment prescription medication Uloric – febuxostat – has a significant chance of causing potentially fatal cardiac events. It has ordered Uloric to be sold with a black box warning label that describes the high danger of the drug. However, Uloric has been sold, used, and prescribed for more than a decade before it was put in the black box.
A trial of Uloric that included thousands of subjects determined it could cause:
- Blood clots
- Heart failure
- Pulmonary embolism (PE)
- Unstable angina
The trial also determined that an alternative drug – allopurinol – could produce the same benefits with a much lower chance of fatal side effects. Yet this information was not made readily available to Uloric users.
