What is Elmiron?

Elmiron (pentosan polysulfate sodium) is a prescription drug used to treat a condition called interstitial cystitis (IC), sometimes known as “painful bladder syndrome.” Created by a company called Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the drug has been widely prescribed since it was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996. Elmiron is the only currently approved drug to treat IC, and it brings in at least $150 million in revenue for Janssen each year in the United States alone.

In 2018, an article was published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology that revealed six patients at one medical institution experienced pigmentary maculopathy caused by an unknown source following regular use of Elmiron for interstitial cystitis. The connection between Elmiron and vision problems has since been further documented, and starting in early 2020. Oliver Law Group has been accepting lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals on behalf of victims.

Potential Side Effects of Elmiron

The dangers of Elmiron have been primarily connected to various forms of vision problems, particularly maculopathy. Maculopathy is a term referring to general pathological conditions that affect a part of the eye called the macula, the central area of the retina which controls visual acuity and sensitivity.

Vision problems that victims may be able to claim damages for in an Elmiron lawsuit include:

  • Bilateral blindness
  • Blurred vision
  • Decreased night vision
  • Degenerative maculopathy
  • Halo vision
  • Macular retinopathy
  • Macular/pattern dystrophy
  • Malattia leventinese (DHRD)
  • Metamorphopsia
  • Pigmentary maculopathy
  • Retinal pigment epithelium atrophy
  • Retinopathy
  • Scotoma
  • Unilateral blindness
  • Vision impairment
  • Vision loss

The effects of such vision problems can include:

  • Difficulty adjusting eyes to dim lighting or the dark
  • Eye pain or discomfort
  • Having trouble reading
  • Having trouble seeing objects that are close
  • Vision loss in certain areas of the field of vision

How to File an Elmiron Lawsuit

Oliver Law Group is currently accepting cases regarding individuals who took Elmiron and suffered vision problems.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals has been accused of knowing about the vision-altering effects of Elmiron but failing to properly warn the public about the risks involved in taking the drug, especially over long periods of time. The information included with an Elmiron prescription provided by Janssen, which lists the drug’s side effects and warnings, included no information about the risks of maculopathy until June of 2020, even though most of the vision problems caused by Elmiron are now well-documented—and irreversible.

To file a claim, you should first consult with an experienced Elmiron lawyer. An attorney can listen to the specific facts of your situation to determine whether you have a viable claim. If a lawyer does believe you have a case, they will help you move forward.

The criteria for eligibility filing an Elmiron lawsuit in the United States are:

  • Patients must have used prescription Elmiron and
  • Vision problems must have begun either while on Elmiron or within one year of stopping.

If you meet the above, your lawyer will walk you through the next steps and help you complete any required paperwork and procedures before the filing deadline is up. Because there are time limits to file lawsuits related to bad drugs, we suggest consulting with a lawyer as soon as possible if you think you might be eligible. Oliver Law Group P.C., based in Troy, Michigan, is currently accepting Elmiron cases in all 50 states.
