Invokana Injury Attorneys

Oliver Law Group, P.C. Handles Invokana Lawsuits in Michigan

If you or a loved one used the Type 2 diabetes medication Invokana and have suffered from ketoacidosis, kidney issues, or amputations of the toe, foot, or leg, you may be eligible for financial compensation.

Due to the varied side effects and issues affiliated with taking Invokana, the lawsuits set forth diversify from physical injuries, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, amputation, and even death. However, the most notable legal argument brought forth to the drug companies is the lack of information about the risks associated with Invokana. If proper notification of the risks had been administered, patients could have chosen an alternative drug treatment to treat their Type 2 diabetes.

What is Invokana Used For?

Sodium-glucose contransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, such as Invokana (canagliflozin), are a category of drugs that treat low blood sugar in adults with Type 2 diabetes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings that taking SGLT2 Type 2 diabetes medications may have several adverse side effects.

In 2017, a black box warning (the highest level safety alert issued by the FDA) was released for patients taking Invokana. Although the FDA disclosed the risks associated with SGLT2 inhibitors, affected individuals argue that Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson) did not properly disclose the risk of the medication and failed to inform patients about the adverse side effects.

Some users of Invokana have suffered side effects that required hospitalizations, where others have been permanently disabled. Due to these devastating medical crises, users of the drug have opted to take legal action against the makers of Invokana (Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson).

With the additional FDA black box (highest level) warning concerning the risks of Invokana, it is expected that additional lawsuits will be filed. If you have taken Invokana and suffered any adverse side effects, you may be entitled to compensation.

What are the side effects of Invokana?

Invokana side effects include the onset of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is related to excessive acid levels (ketones) in the blood and is characterized by breathing problems, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion or difficulty concentrating, unusual fatigue or sleepiness, and dry or flushed skin. Kidney injuries or impaired function have also been associated with taking Invokana.

Side effects of Invokana may include:

  • Kidney failure or impairment
  • Dehydration/fluid imbalances
  • Kidney stones
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Abnormal weight loss

The kidneys serve the key functions of filtering waste products from the blood, assist with controlling blood pressure, balance electrolytes, and aid in red blood cell production. Improper function of the kidneys can result in increased weakness, lethargy, confusion, weakness, abnormal heart rhythms, and even death.

Increased likelihood of bone fracture and leg, foot, or toe amputations are also associated with taking Invokana. Risks are twice that of people taking Invokana compared to regular patients taking a placebo. Patients experiencing a higher level of tenderness, sores, ulcers, and/or infections in their legs or feet should contact a medical professional immediately.
