Were You or a Loved One Injured by a Catheter?

On Dec. 15, 2020, catheter manufacturer Penumbra issued an self imposed urgent recall of its Jet 7 Xtra Flex Catheter. The recall was ostensibly the result of the FDA receiving more than 200 reports associated with the device, often concerning malfunctions, serious injuries, and even death. If you or a loved one were injured by a Penumbra Jet 7 catheter, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills and other damages.

Which Jet 7 Catheters Are Affected by the Recall?

Currently, the Jet 7 Xtra Flex catheter is the subject of the recall. It was originally approved for use by the FDA on June 16, 2019, but a self-imposed recall was issued in mid-December 2020. Also affected is the Jet 7MAX configuration, which includes the aforementioned catheter model and a MAX Delivery device, which was cleared for use on Feb. 27, 2020.

Following Penumbra’s voluntary recall of the device, the FDA directed all users to refrain from using the device and that it should be removed from every facility’s inventory. The recall, however, doesn’t preclude the possibility of plaintiffs holding the company accountable. If you or a loved one were injured by a Jet 7 Xtra Flex catheter or its configuration with a MAX Delivery Device, you may be eligible to recover compensation. How Have People Been Injured by a Jet 7 Catheter?

Penumbra’s voluntary recall of its Jet 7 Xtra Flex catheter is a result of the device’s potential to fail in a number of possible ways.

Some of these include the following:

  • Expansion
  • Ballooning
  • Rupture
  • Complete separation
  • Breakage
  • Exposing support coils close to the distal tip reach of the part of the device

Manufacturer tests of the device involved plugging and pressurizing the distal tip to failure. These tests revealed that the product is incapable of withstanding equal pressure bursts to failure as the manufacturer’s other devices used to remove thrombus in stroke patients can.

What Should I Do If I or Someone I Love Was Injured?

Anyone who has been injured by Penumbra’s Jet 7 Xtra Flex catheter should contact a lawyer and ask about taking legal action to recover the compensation they may be entitled to receive. If you are looking for a Jet 7 attorney our attorneys at Oliver Law Group, P.C. can provide the legal assistance you require.
